IV Ketamine
-
IV ketamine is a medication used off-label for the treatment of conditions such as treatment-resistant depression (TRD), certain mood disorders, and some chronic pain conditions. Ketamine is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an anesthetic; however, its use in mental health treatment is considered off-label. Off-label use of medications is legal and common. Ketamine works primarily by affecting NMDA receptors in the brain and may help improve mood and reduce symptoms of depression, sometimes more rapidly than traditional antidepressants.
-
Ketamine is an NMDA receptor antagonist that affects glutamate signaling in the brain. It is believed to promote neuroplasticity and improve communication between brain cells, which may help reduce symptoms of depression. Unlike intranasal formulations, IV ketamine is administered directly into the bloodstream via infusion, allowing precise control of dosing and onset of effects.
-
Common side effects of IV ketamine treatment may include dizziness, nausea, drowsiness, blurred vision, increased blood pressure, or temporary dissociation (feeling detached from yourself or your surroundings). These effects are typically short-lived and are carefully monitored by medical staff throughout your treatment session.
-
You may be a candidate for IV ketamine if you are struggling with depression, anxiety, PTSD, or other conditions that have not improved with traditional treatments. Eligibility is determined through a psychiatric evaluation, where your provider will review your symptoms, medical history, and treatment goals to determine whether IV ketamine is appropriate for you.
-
At this time, IV ketamine for mental health management is not covered by insurance. If IV ketamine is too costly, Spravato can generally be covered if approved by insurance.

Prior to IV ketamine treatment, refrain from eating for at least 6 hours prior to treatment or drinking clear liquids for at least 2 hours prior (unless otherwise instructed). You must refrain from alcohol 24 hours prior-to and following ketamine administration. You must refrain from other illegal substances during your ketamine infusion treatment. You may take your usual medications as directed by your provider.
-
During IV ketamine treatment, a small intravenous line is placed in your arm and the medication is slowly infused while you are in a comfortable, supervised setting. You may feel relaxed or drowsy and could experience temporary dissociation or changes in perception. We will monitor you closely throughout the session to ensure your safety and comfort, and you will rest in the clinic until the effects wear off before going home with a designated driver.
-
A series of infusions is recommended so that symptom relief has a longer duration of action. The frequency of treatments varies but often begins with a series (e.g., 1–2 times per week), followed by maintenance treatments depending on response. Infusion times vary, typically lasting about 40–90 minutes per treatment.
-
At lower doses, these treatments are not addictive. Treatments are done in a controlled setting in office, so risk for misuse/abuse is minimized.
